Environmental standards in our country are divided into six categories: Environmental Quality Standards, Pollutant Discharge Standards (or Pollution Control Standards), Environmental Basic Standards, Environmental Method Standards, Environmental Standard Materials Standards and Environmental Protection Instruments and Equipment Standards.
Environmental standards are divided into two levels: national standards and local standards, among which environmental basic standards, environmental method standards and reference material standards are only national standards, and are in line with international standards as much as possible.
  Environmental Quality Standards
In order to protect human health, maintain a healthy ecological balance and ensure the material wealth of society, and take into account technical and economic conditions, restrictions on harmful substances and factors in the environment. It is the basis for measuring environmental quality, the goal of environmental protection policies, the basis for environmental management, and the basis for formulating pollutant control standards.
  (2) Pollutant control standards
In order to achieve environmental quality goals, combined with technical and economic conditions and environmental characteristics, the control provisions for harmful substances or harmful factors discharged into the environment. Due to the vast territory of our country and the large differences in local conditions, many provinces and cities have formulated local emission standards, but they should meet the following two points: ① Items not specified in the national standards; ② Local standards should be stricter than the national standards to play a supplementary and perfect role.
  (III) Basic environmental standards
In the scope of environmental standardization work, the uniform provisions for guiding symbols, codes, guidelines, procedures, and specifications are the basis for formulating other environmental standards.
  (Iv) Environmental approach standards
Standards for testing, inspection, analysis, sampling, and statistical calculations in environmental protection work.
  (5) Environmental standards Sample standards
Environmental standard samples are materials or substances used to calibrate instruments, verify measurement methods, perform quantity transfer or quality control in environmental protection work. The requirements that such materials or substances must meet are called environmental standard sample standards.
  (6) Environmental protection instrument and equipment standards
In order to ensure the efficiency of pollution control equipment and the reliability and comparability of environmental monitoring data, the technical requirements for environmental protection instruments and equipment are stipulated.
