What holiday is on May 31st?
World No Tobacco Day (World No Tobacco Day, or translation of World No Tobacco Day) falls on May 31 of the Gregorian calendar every year. It was proposed by the World Health Organization in November 1987 and began to be implemented in 1988. It was officially established on May 31 every year in 1989. The meaning of World No Tobacco Day is to promote the concept of non-smoking.
The origin of World No Tobacco Day
Tobacco is a wild plant that grows in South America. At first, Indians chewed or made tobacco leaves into cigarettes to burn and suck. Tobacco has been popular around the world for more than 200 years, and it was not until the 20th century that humans began to realize the harm of tobacco to humans. In 1977, the American Cancer Association first proposed a way of publicity and education to control smoking - No Tobacco Day. On this day, "Smoking is harmful to health" publicity is carried out nationwide in the United States to discourage smokers from smoking on that day, and stores stop selling tobacco products for one day. The United States has designated Thursday in the third week of November every year as its own No Tobacco Day. Since then, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, China and other countries and regions have also formulated No Tobacco Day.
World No Tobacco Day (English: World No Tobacco Day, or translation of World No Tobacco Day), in November 1987, the World Health Organization recommended that April 7 be designated as "World No Tobacco Day" every year, and it began to be implemented in 1988. However, because April 7 is the anniversary of the establishment of the World Health Organization, on this day every year, the World Health Organization has to propose a theme of health care requirements. In order not to interfere with its health theme, the World Health Organization decided to designate May 31 every year as World No Tobacco Day from 1989, and China also regards this day as China's No Tobacco Day.
Since the 1950s, a large number of epidemiological studies worldwide have confirmed that smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer.
The purpose of World No Tobacco Day
The establishment of World No Tobacco Day is a way to educate citizens on smoking control. The toxicity of tobacco to humans
Nearly 6 million people die each year from the tobacco epidemic: more than 5 million are users and former users; and more than 600,000 are non-smokers exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke. Tobacco is second only to hypertension and the largest contributor to the epidemic of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and emphysema, which account for 63% of mortality; smokers are more susceptible to certain infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia; no consumer product has killed so many people as needlessly as tobacco. It killed 100 million people in the 20th century. Unless we act, it will kill as many as 1 billion people in the 21st century. All of these deaths could have been completely prevented
