Biotin-labeled DNA probes can substitute for radioactive labeled DNA probes in many applications including in situ hybridization and chromosome localization. Biotin-labeled probes can be detected using methods based on the strong binding of biotin to avidin, such as direct detection of labeled DNA using fluorescently labeled avidin or indirect detection of labeled DNA using avidin conjugated with HRP, alkaline phosphatase, or antibodies.
