Ms-PEG13-t-butyl ester is a PEG derivative containing a mesyl group and a t-butyl ester moiety. The mesyl group is a good leaving group for nucleophilic substitution reactions. The hydrophilic PEG spacer increases the water solubility of a compound in aqueous media. The t-butyl protected carboxyl group can be deprotected under acidic conditions and allowing for the carboxylic acid to react with primary amines in the presence of activators such as EDC and DCC.
