Mechanistic studies show that both compounds inhibit bacterial fatty acid biosynthesis, which is essential for the survival of bacteria. Platencin may have the potential to be more effective on Platensimycin resistant bacteria, because it affects two essential proteins, β-ketoacyl-ACP synthase II (FabF) and III (FabH), as opposed to Platensymycin, which affects only FabF.
