易燃，发烟、有毒。有氧或露光下能自行聚合，与一定空气混合能引起爆炸。能溶于一般有机溶剂，微溶于水。有浓碱存在时能剧烈聚合。20℃时，7.35份溶于100份水或3.1份水溶于100份丙烯腈。能与大多数有机溶剂混溶。易燃，25℃时能与空气形成爆炸性混合物，爆炸极限3.05%-17.0%。中等毒，半数致死量（大鼠，经口）93mg/kg。合成橡胶及塑料，有机合成中引入氰乙基，谷类烟熏剂，合成表面活性剂和抗氧剂。可制造抗水剂和胶粘剂等，也用于其他有机合成和医药工业中，并用作谷类熏蒸剂等。可用于制造丙烯酸纤维、树脂(丙烯腈-丁二烯-苯乙烯、苯乙烯-丙烯腈等)以及丁腈橡胶(丁二烯-丙烯腈)。此外，本品也是一种非质子型极性溶剂。
