格氏试剂通常以溶液的形式使用，一般呈现为浅灰色至浅棕色透明溶液。它们一般以烷基卤化镁(RMgX)和二烷基镁(R2Mg)的中间态存在，是和复杂组分形成的平衡态混合物 (称为“Schlenk平衡”)。 其中的一些种类可能由于溶解度降低而产生沉淀，但这并不会影响它们的实际使用。 当出现沉淀时，请轻轻地摇晃瓶子使悬浮物充分分散后使用（如果沉淀物的量非常少，您可以使用悬浮液的上层清液）。特别是在冬天等寒冷的条件下，可能经常生成大量沉淀物。这种情况下，请用干燥的玻璃棒捣碎后使用。另外，您也可以将瓶子放进塑料袋后浸入40℃的水浴中使固体溶解(加热需要专业人员来操作，以防有安全隐患，请注意瓶子开启时有机溶剂的挥发）。
