易溶于于丙酮，四氯化碳，乙醚，氯仿等，难溶于水，在中性和酸性介质中稳定，但在碱性介质中易水解失去杀虫活性皮蝇硫磷对多种害虫有很好的杀虫效果,兼具动物内吸和熏蒸作用。一般在驱虫上主要是利用动物内吸。由于蒸气压高，因此本品对卫生害虫，如家蝇很效，可以放在开口的容器内保存12-16周有效。同时因毒性低，可用于食品加工厂灭蝇，此外，使用本品熏蒸可有效防治粮食害虫。对农业害虫如麦杆蝇，防治效果与敌百虫相似，对小菜蛾的防治交果可达94.5%。
