白磷的同素异形体，红褐色无定形粉末。部分具有金属光泽,着火点在260℃以上，416℃升华，活泼性低于黄磷，只有高温时反应。极微溶于冷水，不溶于热水、稀酸、二硫化碳和有机溶剂，略溶于无水乙醇，可溶于三溴化磷和氢氧化钠在空气中易吸潮变质。易燃、无毒、无臭，在暗处不发光。接触氧化剂时可引起爆炸。有机分析中用于氢碘酸还原反应。在测定甲氧基时，用以结合反应中生成的碘。有机合成。制造磷酸、磷化氢、五氧化二磷、五氯化磷、三氯化磷和杀虫剂。 电子级红磷是化合物半导体的主要材料之一，可用于合成磷化铟（InP）、磷化镓（GaP）、磷砷化镓铝（AlGaAsP）、磷砷化镓铟（InGaAsP）、磷砷化镓（GaAsP）等化合物半导体。红磷也可用作IC等掺杂的固态磷源。
