有吸湿性。溶于水。在酸性溶液中煮沸，水解成正磷酸盐。半数致死量(大鼠，经口)6.5g/kg。有刺激性。 白色粉末或颗粒状固体。能溶于水，对碱金属与重金属盐有络合能力，能软化硬水，可调节缓冲皂化值的pH值，1%溶液pH值为9.7，具有离子交换性能，使悬浮液变成溶液。 三聚磷酸钠用于洗涤剂，作为助剂、肥皂增效剂及防止条皂结晶和起霜 ，工业用水软水剂 、制革预鞣剂、染色助剂、油井掘泥控制剂，制纸用油污防止剂，油漆、高岭土、氧化镁、碳酸钙等悬浮液处理的有效分散剂。食用级三聚磷酸钠可作为各种鱼肉制品的食品改良剂，饮料的澄清剂。
