有潮解性，易溶于形成碘酸，可溶于甲醇，但溶液不稳定而析出碘，能溶于硝酸，但当硝酸浓度大于50%，又析出五氧化二碘结晶，不溶于无水醇、醚、氯仿和二硫化碳，加热至275℃以下为熔融而分解出紫色有毒碘蒸气和氧气，350℃时分解加速，在熔封管内加热至370℃则爆炸，当干燥粉未与可燃的有机物质接触，能发烟燃烧。用作氧化剂和用于则定气体中的一氧化碳。使一氧化碳氧化成二氧化碘，气体分析，除去空气中一氧化碳。
