Cubic crystals of sodium sulfide (Na2S) are extremely hygroscopic in nature and discolor on exposure to air. Na2S is soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol and insoluble in ether. Aqueous solutions of Na2S are strongly alkaline.It is used for H2S therapy, to study its effect on the prevention of diabetes in animals.
