邻联甲苯胺是一种二酸性染料，微溶于水，易溶于乙醚和乙醇。在暴露于氯或溴蒸气时，它会产生深蓝色产物。这是检测空气或水中的氯、硝酸盐和过氧化氢的基础。与游离氯反应时，变成黄色。邻联甲苯胺易于形成酸式盐。金、铈、游离氯的光度测定。测定硝酸盐、锰、亚硝酸盐、铬盐、铜盐、钴、汞和空气中的氰离子。分析标准品是测定金和游离氯的灵敏比色光敏。
