有滑腻感。微有脂肪气味。易溶于热溶剂，缓慢地溶于冷水和冷乙醇，溶于热水和乙醇，遇酸分解成硬脂酸和相应的钠盐。水溶液因水解而呈强碱性，醇溶液近中性。可作为聚乙稀的热稳定剂，具有优良的润滑性，加工性能好，与锌皂和环氧化合物并用具有协同效应、可提高热稳定性，与盐基性铅盐和铅皂并用于硬制品中，可提高凝胶化速度。本品用于聚乙稀和聚丙烯中可以消除残存催化剂对树脂颜色和稳定性的不良影响。本品还广泛用作聚烯烃，聚酯增强塑料，酚醛树脂氨基树脂等热固化塑料的润滑剂和脱膜剂。
