无味。微吸湿。加热至225-250℃生成酸性焦磷酸钠，350-400℃形成偏磷酸钠。半数致死量(大鼠，肌肉)250mg/kg。易溶于水，水溶液呈酸性，在湿空气中能结块，几乎不溶于乙醇。加热至100℃时则脱水，在190－210℃时生成焦磷酸钠，在280－300℃分解为偏磷酸钠。缓冲剂,软水剂。医药工业用于制兴奋剂和果子盐。用作洗涤剂、酸度缓冲剂和染料的助剂，也用于锅炉水处理、云母片砌合、焙粉制造和电镀等。
