本试剂是一种复合的中性染色剂，由曙红和一种氧化的并除去部分甲基的亚甲蓝组成的化合物。它对于原生质的染色，具有分别嗜中性、嗜碱性和嗜酸性部分的作用。特别使用于血液的染色。溶于乙醇，不溶于水。最大吸收波长640(522)nm。生物染色。显微镜涂片用染色剂，如血、骨髓的染色、血液中寄生虫染色(原虫、利什曼原虫、血丝虫等)。
