异戊二烯生物合成过程中的关键酶，可催化形成二磷酸法尼酯（FPP），它是甾醇、多羟基化合物、类胡萝卜素和泛醌等几类必需代谢物的前体。FPP 还是蛋白质法尼基化和客醯基化的底物。催化焦磷酸异戊烯酯与焦磷酸烯丙基酯、焦磷酸二甲基烯丙基酯以及由此产生的焦磷酸香叶酯依次缩合，最终生成焦磷酸法尼酯。
