生化机理

核膜解体后，需要它来维持分散在细胞质中的单条有丝分裂染色体。与有丝分裂染色体表面（即染色体周围层）结合，覆盖染色体表面的很大一部分。通过形成立体和静电电荷屏障，防止染色体塌缩成单一染色质块：该蛋白质具有高净电荷，可作为表面活性剂，分散染色体，使染色体能够独立运动。结合 DNA，偏爱超卷曲 DNA 和富含 AT 的 DNA。不影响有丝分裂染色体的内部结构。可能在染色质组织中发挥作用。不过，目前还不清楚它是在染色质组织中直接发挥作用，还是其维持有丝分裂染色体分散功能的间接结果（可能）。
