生化机理

转录抑制因子，能与启动子中的 CpG 岛结合，在启动子中，DNA 在 CpG 二核苷酸中胞嘧啶的第 5 位被甲基化。甲基甲磺酸甲酯（MMS）损伤 DNA 时产生的 7-mG 会破坏其结合。作为转录抑制因子，通过招募 AFT7IP，进而招募组蛋白甲基转移酶 SETDB1 等因子，在基因沉默中发挥作用。可能与 SETDB1 和 ATF7IP 形成复合物，从而抑制转录，并将 DNA 甲基化与组蛋白'Lys-9'三甲基化结合起来。异构体 1 和异构体 2 也能抑制未甲基化启动子的转录。
