IL-8 是一种趋化因子，能吸引中性粒细胞、嗜碱性粒细胞和 T 细胞，但不能吸引单核细胞。它还参与中性粒细胞的活化。在炎症刺激下，它会从几种细胞类型中释放出来。IL-8(6-77) 对中性粒细胞活化的活性要高 5-10 倍，IL-8(5-77) 对中性粒细胞活化的活性更高，与 IL-8(1-77)相比，IL-8(7-77) 与受体 CXCR1 和 CXCR2 的亲和力分别更高。
