与 TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 和 TNFRSF1B/TNFBR 结合的细胞因子。它主要由巨噬细胞分泌，可诱导某些肿瘤细胞系的细胞死亡。它是一种强效热原，可通过直接作用或刺激白细胞介素-1分泌引起发热，并与诱导恶病质有关。翻译后：可溶性形式通过蛋白水解加工从膜形式衍生出来。膜形式（而非可溶性形式）在丝氨酸残基上被磷酸化。通过与可溶性 TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 结合，膜形式发生去磷酸化。O-糖基化；聚糖包含半乳糖、N-乙酰半乳糖胺和 N-乙酰神经氨酸。
