可能激活 NF-kappa-B，促进细胞凋亡。可能激活 JNK 并参与 T 细胞分化。正常细胞体死亡和轴突修剪都需要它。营养因子缺乏会引发β-分泌酶裂解表面APP，释放出sAPP-beta，sAPP-beta进一步被裂解，释放出APP的N-末端片段（N-APP）。N-APP 可与 TNFRSF21 结合，触发 caspase 激活，并导致神经元细胞体（通过 caspase-3）和轴突（通过 caspase-6）变性。
