溶于苯、乙醚、丙酮、四氯化碳和氯仿。遇水及醇分解，在空气中发烟。主要用作医药中间体（如麻醉药γ-羰基丁酸钠的原料）。硫脒头孢菌素的中间体。应用溴乙酰溴可用于将：将胺转化为叠氮基乙酰胺。将p-对氨基苯胂酸转化为4-（2-溴乙酰氨基）苯胂酸，将前体转化为4-（N-(S-penicillaminylacetyl)氨基）苯基胂酸(PENAO)——一种金属药物。将3,5-二甲苯酚转化为3,5-二甲苯基 2-溴乙酸盐。将胱氨二盐酸转化为N,N′-bis（溴乙酰溴）胱胺——一种双功能季铵化剂。也可作为合成咪唑或吡啶类离子液体的试剂。
