溶于稀酸和液氨中，不溶于水，在热水中分解，也不溶于醇和乙酸甲酯、有机溶剂。不与冷的浓硝酸和浓盐酸起作用，加热可溶解放出二氧化碳。在空气中或弱氧化剂存在下则逐渐氧化成碳酸高钴，在真空中加热至350度则变成氧化钴，同时方出二氧化碳。有刺激性。商品尚有含结晶水的。脱水温度103摄氏度。有毒。主要用于电池材料、钴粉、钴氧化物、钴盐化学试剂、氧化钴和其它钴盐、伪装涂料、饲料微料元素和分析试剂，也可用作玻璃、陶瓷等着色材料，还可用作制造催化剂等
