地塞米松是一种抗炎糖皮质激素，可诱导磷脂酶 A2 抑制蛋白（脂皮质素）的产生。它还能抑制一氧化氮合酶的诱导（IC50=5 nM）。地塞米松可降低细胞周期蛋白 A 和 Cdk2 的活性，抑制成骨细胞的 G1/S 转换，并抑制 Rb 蛋白的磷酸化。据观察，地塞米松可诱导人类胸腺细胞和嗜酸性粒细胞凋亡，但对中性粒细胞的凋亡有抑制作用。地塞米松是 IDO 的激活剂。抗炎糖皮质激素（IC 50 = 38 nM，糖皮质激素受体的 K i = 6.7 nM）。对糖皮质激素受体的亲和力是氢化可的松的 7 倍。口服后的长期效应。
