Inhibition of EGFR has been shown to induce apoptosis. Mechanistic studies have shown that EGFR inhibition takes place via downregulation of antiapoptotic protein survivin expression. Downregulation of Survivin has been observed to take place following inhibition of the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. Additional experiments report that EGFR inhibitors also induce upregulation of proapoptotic protein BIM.
