比重1.82，易溶于水,不溶于乙醇,遇酸分解,在潮湿空气中有潮解性,且被空气中的氧所氧化被二氧化碳碳化。具有还原性，能溶解卤素及银盐，加热100℃以上则失去6个结晶水，灼烧则分解为硫酸镁。工业上用于棉织物漂白后的脱氯剂及印染助剂，医药上用作洗涤剂、消毒剂及化学试剂，还可用于电镀、皮革、有机化学制品中, 以及矿石中萃取铜、镍等。
