微臭，水溶液呈酸性。溶于水、乙醇。不溶于乙醚、氯仿、丙酮、乙烷及四氯化碳。本品水溶液无碘酊缺点，着色浅，易洗脱，对粘膜刺激性小，不需用乙醇脱碘，无腐蚀作用，且毒性低。碘载体。被驯服的碘"tamed iodine."，本品因能逐步释放出碘而发挥抗菌作用，其作用机制是使菌体蛋白质变性、死亡。对细菌、真菌、病毒均有效，其特点是对组织刺激性小。
