微溶于水，溶于醇和醚，易溶于酸性及碱性水溶液，其钠盐易溶于水。与金属离子形成水溶性或不溶于水的配合物，配合物多为红色或红紫色。光度法测定过渡金属的试剂，如Bi3+、Co2+、Fe3+、Pd 2+、Ni2+、NbO 、In3+、La3+、Tn4+、等离子的显色剂。EDTA配合滴定测定Al3+、Bi3+、Ca3+、Cu2+、Ga7+等的金属指示剂，硝酸铅溶液沉淀滴定MoO 、PO 、WO 等的指示剂。
