微溶于水或冷乙醇，溶于热乙醇或热冰醋酸，易溶于氯仿，几乎不溶于苯。醇溶液呈蓝色荧光，还原斐林氏溶液。稀水溶液呈蓝色荧光，加入浓氨水后荧光增强，存在于茄科植物东莨菪(Swpolia japonica Maxim.)根，颠茄(Atropa balladonna L.)，伞形科植物兴安白芷(Angelica dahurica Benth. et Hook.)根等中。染料，可用于检测氧化爆发期间的活性氧释放;过氧清道夫;乙酰胆碱酯酶抑制剂。临床上有祛风、抗炎、止痛、祛痰作用。
