硫藤黄素是一种二硫吡咯酮抗生素，是4,5-二氢[1,2]二硫杂环戊烯并[4,3-b]吡咯，其中4、5和6位的氢分别被甲基、氧代和乙酰氨基取代。它是RNA聚合酶的强效抑制剂，抑制人脐静脉内皮细胞的血管生成，并抑制JAMM金属蛋白酶。它具有毒素、抗菌剂、抗肿瘤剂、抗真菌剂、EC 2.7.7.6(RNA聚合酶)抑制剂、螯合剂、蛋白质合成抑制剂、血管生成抑制剂、海洋代谢物和细菌代谢物的作用。它是二硫吡咯酮抗生素和乙酰胺的成员。它在功能上与全霉素相关。
