苏木精是从南美的苏木（热带豆科植物）干枝中用乙醚浸制出来的一种色素，是最常用的染料之一。苏木精不能直接染色，必须暴露在通气的地方，使他变成氧化苏木精（又叫苏木素）后才能使用，这叫做“成熟”。苏木精的“成熟”过程需时较长，配置后时间愈久，染色力愈强。被染材料必须经金属盐作媒剂作用后才有着色力。所以在配制苏木精染剂时都要用媒染剂。常用的媒染剂有硫酸铝按、钾明矾和铁明矾等。水溶性SOLUBLE IN HOT WATER。易溶于酒精，微溶于水和甘油，易溶于热水和热乙醇，溶于碱、氨和硼砂的溶液。是染细胞核和染色质的染色剂。定性检定铜(II)、铁(III)、钼酸盐、铋(III)和锡(IV)等。光度测定钒、铝、锡(IV)、氟、铌、钽等。墨水制造。酸碱指示剂,pH 5.0(黄)～6.0(紫)、0.0(粉红)～1.0(绿)。应用苏木精已用于对胃癌组织、心肌组织、心脏切片和卵巢核进行染色。
