水溶性四氮唑是由四氮唑分子苯环中引进带正电或负电和羟基而得来的，带正点的基团如三乙醇胺基团，增加Formazan染料的溶解度。然而，大的阳离子容易与有机阴离子如羧酸盐或磷酸盐形成沉淀。虽然羟基也可以提高四氮唑盐的水溶性，但它相应的Formazan染料水溶性却不是很大。Robiot的四氮唑通过直接或间接在苯环中引入磺酸盐基团来提高水溶性。Robiot也提供新开发的几种苯偶氮型四氮唑盐，它们很容易被NADH或其他还原剂还原而生成橙色或紫色Formazan染料。由于苯偶氮基的存在，颜色随重金属离子改变。因Rob
