成纤维细胞生长因子16（FGF16）出生后优先在心脏中表达，这表明其调控与组织特异性染色质重塑和DNA-蛋白质相互作用有关。在转染的新生大鼠心肌细胞中，MEF2位点的突变导致FGF16启动子活性减弱，这说明染色质重塑和MEF2在FGF16启动子中的结合有助于其在出生后心脏中的表达。FGF16参与了人类手部骨骼的微调。FGF16功能受损也可能是中风4患者出现结缔组织症状的原因。FGF16在卵巢肿瘤中的表达明显增加，FGF16与Wnt通路共同促成了卵巢细胞的癌表型，这表明调节其在卵巢细胞中的表达可能是治疗浸润性卵巢癌的一种有前景的治疗策略。
