GGCT 属于γ-谷氨酰环基转移酶家族。它催化γ-谷氨酰二肽形成 5-氧代脯氨酸，这是谷胱甘肽分解代谢的倒数第二步。GGCT 可能在谷胱甘肽平衡中发挥重要作用。GGCT 还能诱导线粒体释放细胞色素 c，从而诱导细胞凋亡。GGCT 基因的假基因位于 5 号染色体的长臂以及 2 号和 2 号染色体的短臂上。已观察到该基因有编码多种异构体的替代剪接转录本变体。
